Public Service Announcement: Coyotes in the Urban Jungle
The goal of this project was to research and collect information on coyotes living in urban areas and turn it into a 60-second PSA using a green screen and iMovie.
Important questions to cover:
How does one identify a coyote?
What should you do if approached by a coyote?
Why are coyotes making their way into cities in the first place?
How can we educate urban residents about coyotes?
What should we do to raise awareness about protecting coyotes?
This was our last project for STEM to STEAM and I really enjoyed the collaborative efforts that were put into creating this video. In a group with two others, we first searched the web for information about coyotes in urban areas. Apparently, coyotes have been seen across the United States in urban locations such as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. This is an issue that I was not previously aware of, and so it was cool to both learn about it and to create the PSA to educate others. I like the idea of generating a PSA because it puts students in a position of leadership: in 60 seconds, I can say anything I want to the public (about coyotes living in cities.) There was a lot of leeway for creativity in making the video, however, as the educators we strive to be(with our background in traditional classrooms)-our video was less creative and more informative. Together, we made decisions about what information we wanted to provide and how we would provide it. We made choices about aesthetics, sound, and filming. Video is a medium that I greatly enjoy, especially after taking a Basic Media Production course at Adelphi. When making a film in relation to science, or any subject, it is possible to be both informative as well as innovative. There are an array of opportunities within filmmaking to design and build. In creating a PSA, students literally have a voice. They can understand how to be efficient and reliable educators to others as well as themselves.
